The Rise of the Tablet PC

Tablet PC's, IPad's and similar devices are hot and getting hotter in today's fast paced techno society. But will they survive? Tablet PC's are a natural progression in the trend to make things smaller but in getting this small are they compromising too much on practicality? Could they replace the laptop? I think not. The laptop is a marvel of electronics that continues to evolve in its own right in spite of the glut of new gadgets in the market. Why is this? Well firstly, with a pc or laptop, the user isn't confined to the App market for everything they want to do. The software market is much older and more matured and so the choice of applications is more professional and more widespread. Ok, so in media terms, watching videos, listening to music, surfing the web etc, the tablet PC rivals any laptop out there for its portability and so for the entertainment users this technology will be here to stay. But what about the serious business users? I own an IPad, in fact I'm writing this very article on it whilst sat on a train home from London and I find it invaluable as a business tool particularly since the train I am on, and on regularly, is packed with weary commuters. A laptop just wouldn't be practical. So herein lays the question of practicality. Well I don't think there is a competition between the two; I think the tablet PC and laptop can sit side by side in the professional arena in veritable bliss for many years to come.

Besides writing the odd article, I write software for a living and coding a complex piece of software on a virtual keyboard is my idea of hell. Whilst the IPad keyboard is excellent as virtual keyboards go, it is not what I'd call ideal. Besides that, I find writing software is best done in a comfortable environment with some peace and quiet, like my office. So why would I bother with practicality in that environment? I wouldn't. If I'm visiting a client and I need to show a presentation or demonstration of their software or if I'm working away, I need a laptop, so I can find myself a quiet place and do some work. An IPad just doesn't cut the mustard when it comes to getting some serious work done.
 
All that said, that doesn't necessarily rule out the IPad as a serious tool. I do a lot of work in the insurance industry, an industry where you still see brokers lugging huge claims files around the city, often times in suitcases, obtaining old fashion signed agreements from claims adjusters. This is an extremely labour intensive and archaic way of doing things. I could just see insurance brokers in the future carrying their IPad's around getting agreement to claims electronically using custom built apps. There is no end to the use for big business but I think this lies in bespoke use and not general use. We are already seeing survey staff standing in the street using their devices to complete questionnaires.
 
As I write this I realise that as technology advances many of the reasons for choosing a laptop over a tablet will diminish. The App market will intensify and keyboard technology will greatly improve, perhaps even be replaced with a new way of interacting with your computer.
 
Whatever happens, PC's, Laptops, Smartphone's and Tablet PC's all have their place in society and will continue to live alongside each other for some years to come.

Since the introduction of the Apple iPad the consumer has moved toward adopting the concept of Tablet computing. A PC is a Personal Computer. A Tablet is a particular form factor. This would lead us to conclude that a Tablet PC is a particular  type of personal computer, but in what form or what is a Tablet PC?
A tablet is typically used to refer to an object that you can hold in your hands. Other forms of computers normally require the user to sit at a desk like a 'Desktop' computer or sit in a chair like a 'Laptop' computer. However a 'Tablet' is more of a portable device unlike the portability of a laptop, a tablet can be used while it is mobile.

The size of a tablet is currently someplace from 7 inches to 10 inches measured diagonally. We my certainly see larger tablets and smaller tablets. Indosat Posts Net Profit of Rp681.9 Billion

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Indosat posted a net profit of Rp681.9 billion in the first semester of 2011, up 137.5 percent from Rp287.1 billion in 2010, its president director said.

"The increase in the net profit was generated by the increase in the number of the company’s cellular customers from 37.8 million in the first semester of 2010 to 47.3 million in the first semester of 2011," PT Indosat President Director Harry Sasongko, said here on Monday.

Harry said that up to June 2011, the company booked an income of Rp10.05 trillion, up 4 percent compared with the figure in the corresponding period a year earlier which was Rp9.661 trillion. He said that by taking into account the voluntary separation scheme (VSS) burden in the first semester, the income before depreciation tax interest and amortization (Ebitda) reached Rp4.499 trillion, down 2.1 percent from the previous Rp4.59 trillion.

Thus, the firm posted an Ebitda margin amounting to 44.8 percent, down from 2.8 points from the previous 47.6 percent. The corporate business burden in the June 2011 period jumped up from Rp8.061 trillion to Rp8.713 trillion, so was the case of the business profit which was down 16.5 percent from Rp1.6 trillion to Rp1.337 trillion.

Harry said that of the total corporate income of Rp10.45 trillion, about Rp8.227 trillion came from the cellular business and Rp1.8 trillion from non-cellular phone services.

Acer Iconia Tab A100

Acer began marketing the tablet computer Iconia Tab A100. The first device is a 7-inch tablet that uses the Android operating system Honeycomb 3.2.

New Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0

Samsung's New Galaxy Tab has been rethought, redesigned, ( but not renamed Galaxy Tab 10.1) is the first Android tablet to date that seriously goes toe-to-toe with Apple ipad2 in both specifications and design. The consumer models will not be shiped out until June 2011.
The new Galaxy weighs just 1.31 pounds,marginally beating the iPad 2's 1.33 pounds
Samsung truly has delivered on the promise of a new exciting Google-powered tablet, and it is why you should all seriously consider putting away funds as June approaches.
Samsung uses a slightly larger 10.1-inch display (compared to the iPad 2's 9.7-inch IPS panel), yet managed to design a slimmer / taller product that actually weighs less than its rival. The Tab 10.1 still comes out feeling astoundingly rigid, and while you could chalk it up to being a personal preference,. It is  easier to handle with a single hand, and  even nicer once you have a seen the 1280 x 800 screen resolution.
The front of the panel comes with a 2 megapixel camera, and  you get a 3 megapixel camera  on the rear, (capable of shooting 720p video), and a LED flash .  The galaxy 10.1 edges are surrounded by a matte silver finish,  and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The top left edge is home to a pronounced power / sleep button and a volume rocker, while the left and right edges are free of oddities outside of a small speaker grille on each side. The rear edge includes a microphone hole as well as Samsung's own dock connector input.

We're hearing that the 3G version will have a microSD card slot as well as a SIM slot, and of course, the rear will be a far more subtle black.
The plastic back on the Tab 10.1 is the only real design aspect that's somewhat less premium than on apple's iPad 2, but if that's what it took , to shave the weight, we guess we can't shout  too loudly. Still, the new back plate remained intact throughout our testing, and we've no concerns about the build quality.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of the crowd when it comes to processing power; NVIDIA's Tegra 2 silicon is powering things, with a dual-core 1GHz clock speed keeping things on the up and up. It's worth noting that our testing unit only has 32GB of internal storage capacity. There's no microSD card slot, and we're anticipating that all WiFi-only models will be shipped this way. Sammy's yet to clarify, but those requiring  add additional storage should probably keep an eye out for the Tab 10.1 3G.
The 1GHz CPU may be ever-so-slightly out dated compared to the speed demons found within superphones like the Galaxy S II, but it still runs circles around most everything within Android 3.0.
A cold boot-up took under 20 seconds, and once the lock screen popped up, we were into the camera application and shooting 720p video in less than three seconds. Anyone with a mid-range Android phone knows the impossibility of that feat.
The capacitive touch panel was abundantly responsive, with both swiping and pinch-to-zoom actions being recognized immediately and accurately. As far as tablet touch experiences go, the Tab 10.1 delivers one that's world class. We struggled to find ways to slow this guy down, and despite a full day of multitasking, swiping through applications felt as brisk as it did after a fresh reboot.
The  touch screen was very responsive, with both swiping and pinch-to-zoom actions being recognized immediately and very  accurate. As far as all other  tablet touch experiences go, the Tab 10.1 is world class. We struggled to find ways to slow this it down, and despite a full day of multitasking, swiping through applications felt as brisk as it did after a fresh reboot.
As for battery life,  it's worth pointing out that the newly  Tab 10.1 packs a 7,000mAh battery, which actually trumps the 6,860mAh battery found in the older model.  A slimmer model with a more battery life? Fantastic!  And we had no issues getting through a full day of usage, with a day of  Tweeting checking,  sending email , checking out foneraiser latest fundraising ideas and surfing the web.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the best Honeycomb tablet to date, and this time, it's by a country mile. There's simply no another Android 3.0 tablet on the market today that matches the new Tab 10.1's style,
Placing it a leep ahead of other, more cumbersome Tegra 2-powered alternatives.
